How to wash MTB clothing: care tips for natural fibres and polyester
Your gear takes care of you on the trail—here’s how to return the favour
Mountain bike apparel gets sweaty, muddy, and sometimes stinky. But with a few simple habits, you can extend its life, improve performance, and save yourself from the dreaded post-ride reek.
Here’s how to care for both natural fibres and synthetics (because we use both), and why we’re moving toward fabrics that need less drama in the laundry basket.
Natural Fibre Gear (Hemp + Organic Cotton)
Wash:
-
Cold water, gentle cycle
-
Mild detergent (no bleach or brighteners)
-
Skip fabric softener
Dry:
-
Air dry flat or hang in shade
-
Avoid dryers to prevent shrinkage or weakening fibres
Pro tip: Hemp is anti-bacterial. You can usually wear it a few times before it needs a wash.
Synthetic Gear (Polyester, Nylon)
Regular Wash:
-
Cold or warm water
-
Sport-specific detergent if possible
-
Wash inside out
-
Use a microfibre bag to catch plastic shedding
Deep Clean (for odour build-up):
-
Soak in water + vinegar or bicarb
-
Add a laundry booster like oxygen bleach
-
Soak 30–60 min, then wash as usual
Dry:
-
Line dry when you can
-
Avoid storing damp gear to prevent mildew
Why We’re Shifting Toward Natural Fibres
They need:
-
Less washing
-
Less special treatment
-
Less post-ride regret
Our hemp-cotton-spandex blend resists odour, breathes better, and feels good on your skin. It’s less needy and more ride-ready.
